The Hong Kong 'China' Overprints British Offices In China 1917 - 1930

Chefoo

Under the Treaty of Tientsin from 1858 which was ratified by the Treaty of Peking in 1860, Chefoo became a Treaty Port. Chefoo lies in the center of the north-east coast of the Shantung Peninsular, which is fifty miles west of Wei Hai Wei and in the center of the silk industry. It closed on 30 November 1922.

"The primary function of an index letter in a circular date stamp is to positively identify the person who made that mark. In most British Post Offices, the index letter A was the Postmaster's private seal. For the Chefoo cancels used on the KGV China overpring, the index A was not used. ... A possible reason may be that the British Post Office in Chefoo did not have an official postmaster and that the local trading firm, Curtis Brothers, essentially managed the postal service and the packet service to Shanghai."
